Martine Syms
Project 106, 2017
In this MoMA video, Martine Syms offers a walkthrough of her solo exhibition, where she explores how media shapes and distorts Black identity. Through video, performance, and lecture, she dissects the aesthetics of representation found in television, memes, cinema, and internet culture.
Syms highlights how these fragments of media language are learned, internalized, and performed. Her work reassembles them into powerful collages that expose their influence—while reclaiming them as tools for
self-definition. In doing so, she positions Black identity as an active and
self-directed presence in media.
